Early life
Jon Secada was born in Havana on October 4, 1961. He was given the name Juan Francisco Secada Remirez. Jose Secada, his father, was a political prisoner under the Communist Cuban government for three years. The Secada family was allowed to emigrate in 1971 and moved to Miami, Florida. His parents then opened a coffee shop. Secada spent most of his childhood in Hialeah (Florida). Secada attended Hialeah Senior High school and was a member of the musical theater. After being encouraged by his parents, he discovered he had strong musical talents and decided to pursue music as a career.
He attended high school and then went to the Frost School of Music, University of Miami. He earned a Bachelor of Music degree in 1983, and a Master of Music degree in jazz vocal performance in 1986. He was awarded the cum-laude award upon graduation and inducted into The Iron Arrow Honor Society, which is the University of Miami’s highest honor.
Career
Secada graduated from university in 1985 and became a Miami Dade College teacher. He was also introduced to Emilio Estefan by friends, who was the husband of Gloria Estefan and a member of the band Miami Sound Machine. Estefan was able to listen to one Secada demo, which he enjoyed. Secada asked Estefan to be their mentor and music manager. Secada was also a backup singer to Miami Sound Machine.

They were married in 1997 and had two children together. The entire family lives in the same large house near the University of Miami, Coral Gables, Florida.
Secada created the Jon Secada Music Scholarship at The University of Miami because of his connections with the university. Secada also raised funds for The Recording Academy’s “Keeping Music in Schools” initiative which supports public school music programs. He also supports a variety of music and arts-related initiatives, as well as other philanthropic endeavors like the Make-A-Wish Foundation and Girls and Boys Clubs of America.
